Cohen by Cohen

Last week Lapid wrote about a legend and a man whom I greatly admire – Leonard Cohen.

It is a tricky task to illustrate Cohen’s poetry. In fact, all poetry lends itself with great difficulty to illustration, if at all. By nature, poetry, is charged with emotions as it is, to my understanding, a matter directly emitted from the heart.

I am usually shying away from making portraits, however, I have made an effort this time. After all, Leonard is family…

I am bringing here the lyrics of Cohen’s poem/song Who By Fire. first of all, because I just love it, and secondly as it was brought to the reader in Hebrew this week, beautifully translated by Lapid

Who By Fire.

And who by fire, who by water,
who in the sunshine, who in the night time,
who by high ordeal, who by common trial,
who in your merry merry month of may,
who by very slow decay,
and who shall I say is calling?
And who in her lonely slip, who by barbiturate,
who in these realms of love, who by something blunt,
and who by avalanche, who by powder,
who for his greed, who for his hunger,
and who shall I say is calling?

And who by brave assent, who by accident,
who in solitude, who in this mirror,
who by his lady’s command, who by his own hand,
who in mortal chains, who in power,
and who shall I say is calling?

  1. love it all
    your blog is wonderfull!!
so full of ideas and atmospheres
i am writing my comment here because i love the illustration with the heart
the man (i suspect it to be L.C) touching the red heart of the other person
it is very much related to the dance piece i am creating with anat now , (which, by the way, was finally presented today!!)
dis-donque!! looks like you are realy talented my dear brother in law!!!
    bon voyage;)

  2. Izhar – great portrait of Leonard.
I saw him play a couple of weeks back in London. I think he did perform Who By Fire but he performed so many great songs that I cannot remember (I subsequently played my entire MP3 Cohen collection twice and WBF is definitely on that).
I so enjoyed the concert that, getting an email from my concert ticket company the same night about more concerts later in the year, I immediately booked myself a couple of tickets for November.
I know he was in Paris just after London – hope you saw him or will have the opportunity to do so.
